8.2.3.Privacy risks in IoT and third-party apps

The increasing trend of privacy issues involving Internet of Things (IoT) and third-party applications highlights new risks to personal data and a number of ethical concerns. A case involving misuse of personal data and breach of privacy occurred in 2015, when Facebook allowed a third-party application created by Cambridge Analytica onto their platform. The app was configured to surreptitiously harvest the data of 87 million profiles from which information was used during a UK referendum and US election campaign. A subsequent investigation by the ICO identified major failures in data protection standards and a £500,000 penalty was levied on Facebook for violating data protection laws. The fine issued at the time was the maximum amount under the Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA), however, the penalties under the GDPR could have totalled 4% of global revenue amounting to circa £1.4 billion.
